Holiday Depression – The Gift of Companionship
When cold weather arrives, we often think of elderly loved ones and worry about slipping on ice and risk of hypothermia. Less obvious, but equally important, is depression.
Depression affects more than six million elderly Americans. Some people experience increased feelings of depression during the winter, when days are shorter and the weather gets cold.
For seniors, the holidays can be a depressing reminder of lost loved ones and happier times. Family, friends and caregivers can help prevent this by watching for signs of depression and including senior loved ones in holiday celebrations.
As we age, our holiday experiences will change but enjoying them shouldn’t.
You can help raise your senior loved ones’ spirits through regular visits, outings and involvement in family activities. The greatest gift for a senior during the holidays is companionship.
Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, private duty home care can play a big role in a senior’s well-being.
In addition to assisting seniors with activities and chores, our caregivers build relationships with clients. Caregiver visits become an occasion that seniors look forward to. They also provide peace of mind to the senior’s family, allowing them to take care of obligations and enjoy more meaningful family visits.
Caregivers can provide transportation so that seniors may continue their active social life during this festive season. They can also plan fun activities in the comfort of home or simply spend time sharing memories and looking through photo albums. Throughout all of this, caregivers also monitor for changes in mood or potential issues needing attention.
You can’t do everything. We team with families to improve quality of life for seniors. If we can help you or a senior loved one, please contact us.
